BLACKVILLE – A storm came through a bit early west of Orangeburg, where Laurens Academy blew past Jefferson Davis Academy on Friday night, 52-14.

In spite of the 8 touchdowns, the Raiders tried to run the clock on offense and were not entirely unsuccessful. Their Thomas Payne rushed for 209 yards in 23 carries.

It was but a comparative drop in the bucket. The Crusaders’ senior quarterback, Thomas Lowry, filled the air with 17 completions in 25 throws for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns: 2 to Caio Rita and 1 each to Clarence Bertoli, Jonas Smith and Diamonte Grant.

Lowry also rushed for 54 yards in 9 carries, scoring twice more.

With JDA (1-5) trying to minimize the short passing game, Lowry and his mates looked downfield

The tack was futile against a strong passing game by the Crusaders. Rita’s scores were of 89 and 51 yards in length. Smith scored from 35 yards on his only catch. Bertoli caught 10 passes for 172 yards. Rita caught 3 for 105.

Bertoli and Rita thus became the first players this season to both exceed 100 yards receiving in a single game.

Laurens Academy (4-3, 1-1 in SCISA Region 1 8-man) takes on W.W. King at Todd Kirk Field next.
