Shell Dula

Shell Dula is a self-effacing man whose speaking voice comes alive when he speaks to football players.

Dula, the Executive Director of the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association, is a native of Laurens and a graduate of Presbyterian College who has never actually coached here. He has won a total of six state championships at Ninety Six, Union and Greenwood.

The players tabbed by their coaches – at Clinton High, Laurens, Laurens Academy and PC – as the best performers in their two most recent games were in the audience at Thursday’s meeting of the Laurens County Touchdown Club, so Dula was right at home.

Dula championed special teams, manly virtues, discipline and equal treatment, regardless of skill level, to an audience that included the county’s head coaches: Corey Fountain of Clinton, Daryl Smith of Laurens, Travis Plowden of Laurens Academy and Steve Englehart of PC.

Nate Hayden

Fountain brought Kadon Crawford, Jishun Copeland, Hezekiah Kinard and Ben Sanchez. Jaedon Goodwin, Gemire Darden, Jordan Roberts and Jay Pulley accompanied Smith. Plowden brought Garrett Murphy, Clarence Bertoli, Daniel Ervin and Dylan Frey. Delvecchio Powell II, Nate Hayden and Dominic Kibby represented the Blue Hose.

All of the county’s teams are at home. T.L. Hanna is at Laurens, South Aiken at Clinton, and Jefferson Davis at Laurens in Friday 7:30 p.m. starts, and Davidson visits Presbyterian on Saturday night at 7.

The past two TD Club players of the week, Bertoli of LA and Roberts of LDHS, received their honors, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.

The Laurens County Touchdown Club meets every other Thursday at noon. Meetings are conducted at The Ridge in Laurens.
