Under the oddest of circumstances, Laurens Academy’s football team will face Holly Hill Academy twice for the 2nd consecutive year.

A year ago, the Crusader season began the season with an 18-12 loss to the Raiders at home. Eleven games later, Holly Hill, which went on to win the state title, defeated LA, 50-36, in the semifinals at home.

In this year’s 2nd game, also in Holly Hill, the Raiders blanked the Crusaders, 62-0.

A final-game victory over Newberry Academy put Laurens Academy (2-8) into the Class A 8-man playoffs. Holly Hill Academy (10-0) is the top seed.

Laurens Academy’s volleyball team, which advanced deep into the SCISA championship tournament, is reaping post-season rewards for its season.

Three Crusaders – Madison Sherman, Payton Breen and Emily Abercrombie – made the All-Region 1-A team, and Shannon McGee was region coach of the year.

McGee and assistant Heather Sherman coached the North team on Saturday in the SCISA all-star game at Wilson Hall in Sumter. Sherman, a sophomore, played for the North.
