W. Wyman King Academy of Batesburg fields a baseball powerhouse this spring, and Laurens Academy, after a quick start, became the Knights’ latest victim, 15-5, on the Crusaders’ senior night Thursday.
The Knights had won the earlier meeting between the two, 11-0, on April 12.
Laurens Academy (9-9) led after an inning, putting up 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning to counter the 2 King (12-3) scored in the top half.
It was 6-4, King, after 2, but then the Knights distanced themselves with 5 in the third.
D. Amick belted a 2-run homer in the second. Billy Amick clouted a 3-run blast in the fifth.
Thomas Lowry allowed 6 runs, though off only 3 hits, in 2 innings, striking out 4 but taking the loss.
Second baseman Brett Young led the Crusaders at the plate with 2 singles, a run and an RBI in 2 at-bats.
King outhit the Crusaders 10-7. Four of the Knights’ hits went for extra bases. None of LA’s 7 did.
C. List picked up the decision for King, though he yielded 5 runs, 3 of them earned, in 3-2/3 innings on the hill.
Judson Watkins, Lowry, Hudson, Willard and Carson Venable each had a single for the Crusaders.
Four – Lowry, Jordan Hudson, Ryland Paxton and Jared Willard – took turns on the mound for Laurens Academy, whose next game is to be in the SCISA Class A playoffs.
