When Newberry Academy visited Laurens Academy for basketball games Friday night, results were about the same.

It was Eagles over Crusaders 59-36 in the girls’ game and 56-26 in the boys’.

Seven players scored for Newberry Academy (15-0, 6-0 region) in the girls’ game, led by Daja Taylor with 18 points and Kailey Cheeks with 11. The Eagles hit 20 of 63 shots (Taylor was 4-18) but 12 of 13 free throws.

Eight scored for Laurens Academy (5-8, 2-3), but only Olivia Huck scored in double figures with 15. The rest of the points came from Rylee Ballard (6), Maddie Loe (5), Payton Breen (4), Sianna Steed (2), Elissa Hucks (2), E.K. Moore (1) and Abby Howard (1).

The Crusaders hit 12-40 field goals and 10-14 free throws.

The Laurens Academy boys are 5-8, 3-2 in region play, and Newberry Academy is 7-3, 4-2.

Leading scorer Diamonte Grant did not play for the Crusaders in the boys’ game.

In fact, no one for Newberry Academy (7-3, 4-2) scored less than 8 points. No one for Laurens Academy (5-8, 3-2) scored more than 9.

The Eagles hit 21 of 44 field-goal attempts with Ryan Brown and Anthony McClean each scoring 17 points, Payton Gardner tallying 14 and Evan Groves 8. Five of Brown’s six shots were 3-points.

Thomas Lowry led the Crusaders with 9 points, followed by Buddy Baker and Clarence Bertoli with 6 each and Andrew Codington 5. LA went 7-33 from the floor.
