The WPCC-AM broadcast crew is linking its first Saturday Morning Rewind with Clinton High School’s appearance in the Greer High School football jamboree.
After holding its weekly, CHS-centered live broadcast at 9 a.m., the Red Devil team of Buddy Bridges, Gene Simmons, B.J. Gardner and Harold Nichols will provide coverage of the jamboree in which the Red Devils face Riverside at Dooley Memorial Stadium.
This year’s morning-after shows, which provide coverage of Laurens District High School and Laurens Academy, as well as other sports news of local interest, will begin each week at 9 a.m. instead of 8, as in the past.
Guests in the opening edition of Saturday Morning Rewind will included CHS athletics director Louie Alexander and principal Dr. Martha Brothers.
Future editions of the show will be held at Clinton’s Whiteford’s Drive-In and feature Red Devil head coach Corey Fountain as well as special guests.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils’ opening game has changed. Clinton will open at Wilder Stadium against Emerald on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. The Clinton junior varsity will visit the Greenwood school on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6.
A single player tested positive for COVID-19 at Union County High School, where Clinton was scheduled to open the season on Sept. 25.
As of now, the Yellow Jackets, according to head coach Brian Thompson, have suspended all workouts until Tuesday, Sept. 29. A similar circumstance postponed the game on Sept. 25 between Region 3-3A members Broome and Emerald.
Since the coronavirus testing left (at least so far) Clinton and Emerald available, a decision was made to swap the dates.
Clovis Simmons’ Clinton tennis team returned to the winning track on Tuesday, shutting out Woodruff , 7-0, at home.
Only Gracie Spangler, at No. 5 singles, faced a serious test, requiring a tie-breaker to defeat the Wolverines’ Anna Henry.
Singles: Mary Catherine Dailey defeated Lauryn Beeler 6-1, 6-0. Ana Maria Rincon defeated Lily Zheng 6-4, 6-0. Chandler Dailey defeated CoCo Zheng 6-2, 6-0. Reese Gowan defeated Marlee Wood 6-0, 6-0. Spangler defeated Henry 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).
Doubles: M.C. Dailey-C. Dailey defeated Beeler-Henry 8-1. Gracie Wiggins-Kimora Wesley defeated Emilee Thompson-Rebecca Wireman 6-2, 6-2.
Next up for Clinton (4-1 overall and in Region 3-3A) is another home match on Thursday against Union County.
