Strom Thurmond brings a balanced offense and a solid defense to Clinton on Friday night for the first game between the Rebels and the Red Devils since Thurmond defeated Clinton 21-3 in the 2005 Class 3A state championship game on Dec. 3, 2005.

Thurmond (3-2 overall and in Region 5-3A) finished in a 3-way tie for runner-up in the region behind the state’s fifth-ranked 3A team, Gilbert, which coincidentally defeated Laurens, 49-21, last week.

Senior quarterback Patrick Westbrook leads the Rebels with 7 touchdown passes. He has completed 57 of 90 attempts for 822 yards. Westbrook has thrown only one interception all year.

Charquez Booker is the leading rusher with 65 carries for 335 yards and an average gain of 5.2 yards. Booker also has scored 7 touchdowns. Gregory Bryant II is Westbrook’s top target with 13 receptions for 272 yards and 3 scores.

Chase Brightharp is Thurmond’s leading tackler with 48.

The Johnston school has defeated Brookland-Cayce (42-28), Fox Creek (28-10) and Swansea (48-0) with losses to Gilbert (28-21) and Orangeburg-Wilkinson (23-13). Thurmond has outscored its opponents by a cumulative margin of 148-89.

This is the first non-region game for both teams. Clinton (2-3) has defeated Emerald (32-26) and Woodruff (33-14) with losses to Broome (27-26), second-ranked Chapman (24-8) and Union County (28-21). The last loss eliminated the Red Devils from playoff contention. Clinton has scored 120 points and yielded 119.
