It comes as no surprise.
COVID-19 is cutting a new swath across the sports programs in progress in school districts 55 and 56.
At present, School District 56 (Clinton High and Middle schools) is taking the more drastic cut, but stay tuned. The district has suspended all “out-of-district athletic activities” until after the Christmas break.
As a practical matter, the above means that the following basketball games are canceled:
Dec. 16, CMS at Wright Middle
Dec. 18 CHS varsity boys at Boiling Springs
Dec. 29, CHS varsity girls/boys vs. Brashier Middle College
Dec. 29, CHS varsity girls and boys vs. McCormick
The intention of the suspension is to allow student-athletes to be healthy for the holidays and the start of region play in January.
Coaches will be in touch with their teams regarding practice and expectations over the holidays.
All the District 55 changes involve Laurens District High School. Rather than “suspending,” canceling or postponing games now, LDHS is keeping basketball going but regrouping in January.
As it stands now:
-- Dec. 16 (Wednesday), varsity boys at Emerald, 6:30 p.m.
– Dec. 18, varsity girls/boys vs. Woodruff, 6 p.m.
– Dec. 21st, JV and varsity girls at Hillcrest (Simpsonville), 5:30/7
– Dec. 22, JVV girls vs. Hillcrest, varsity 7, JV 5:30 (not that varsity team playing first game)
All athletic events that were scheduled for the week of Jan. 4-9 will be postponed and and re-scheduled, region events taking priority.
The region basketball game scheduled at Greer on Jan. 8 is now to be played on Jan. 14.
No revisions have been announced at Laurens Academy.
