Lee Atkinson’s Clinton cross country program won the boys' competition in its home meet on Wednesday.

The Red Devils scored 37 points, followed by Laurens at 52, Emerald at 64 and Mid-Carolina at 78.

The Raiders’ Luis Brenna won the individual race easily with a time 17:17. Clinton’s William Reid finished 3rd at 18:26.

Joining Reid for the Red Devils were: Joey Ardelt, 4th at 18:49; Connor Donley, 9th at 19:30; Keenan Dominick, 10th at 19:39; Hayden Stinson, 13th at 19:51; Sam Gearheart, 14th at 20:14; and Hayden Miner, 15th at 20:16.

 

Mid-Carolina edged Clinton in the girls’ competition.

The Rebels scored 33 points, followed by the Red Devils with 38 and Laurens with 55. Emerald ran individuals but did not compete as a team.

Mid-Carolina’s Cameron Wicker won the indivdual race with a remarkable 19:42 clocking.

Elizabeth Reid finished 3rd at 23:15. Other Clinton times were: Dorothy Trent, 4th at 24:22; Hope Conaway, 10th 25:32; Kimi Carmichael, 19th at 28:27; and Danielle Trent, 21st at 29:20.

Clinton will host the county championship on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The Region 3-3A meet is on Saturday, Oct 24, at Oasis Farms of Connie Maxwell in Greenwood.

Greenville won the Region 2-4A girls’ golf title by a 17-stroke margin over Greenwood at the Eagles’ home course, Stoney Point.

Greenville shot 372, Greenwood 389, Laurens 465 and Eastside 476.

The Raiders’ coach, Jim Iacuone, said it was a good day for his team. Anna Gray Rowland, who shot 92, made all-region and was tied for third overall.

“[Rowland has] done a great job this year with her mental approach to the game, and it’s reflecting in her scores,” Iacuone said. “She has also been a positive influence on the team. As a team, we dropped 36 strokes from our previous outing at Stoney Point on September 14. We continue to improve which is all you can ask for as a coach.”

Other LDHS scores were Bryson Cruickshanks 109, Gracin Gilstrap 131 and Lane McCracken 133.

The upstate qualifier is Monday at Falcon’s Lair Golf Club in Walhalla.

A trip to Woodruff was unpleasant for the Clinton volleyball team. The Wolverines captured the Region 3-3A match 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 at the varsity level and 25-15, 25-22 in junior varsity.

A pair of Clinton football players, Jykorie Gary and Davis Wilson, along with the Red Devil mascot, conducted a virtual reading with local elementary-school students recently.

Laurens Academy volleyball triumphed over Richard Winn on Wednesday by scores of 25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18.

The middle-school Crusaders took two of three games against the Eagles.

Chapman defeated Clinton on Wednesday, 25-15, 25-13, 25-18.

The Panthers’ JV volleyball squad defeated the Red Devils 25-15, 25-13.

Andrew Codington led the Laurens Academy team with a 4th-place finish (20:26) in a meet at Greenwood Christian.

Caleb Howard ran 26:34.

Audrey Noffz led the girls a 26:48, followed by Mary Helen Oliver at 29:32, Ivy Codington 32:37 and Page Codington 32:29.
