Laurens District High had a successful Saturday in Clinton as the Raiders won junior varsity and C team games with the Red Devils while also winning the varsity contest.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Laurens JV squad scored 2 runs to come from behind and defeat Clinton, 3-2, handing the Red Devils their first loss.

It was Joshua Hughes who singled in the 2 runs.

The winning pitcher was Seth Hill. Chase Ashley took the loss. Asher Goss started the game for Laurens (10-1), allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 8. Carson Glenn started for Clinton (8-1) and pitched 5 shutout innings, walking 1 and fanning 6. The pitcher went five innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out six and walking one.

Hughes, Jordan Roberts and Owen Pridgen had a hit apiece for the Raiders. Pridgen’s was a triple.

Zane McLendon had 2 hits in 3 at-bats for the Red Devils. Clinton outhit Laurens, 5-3, but all the Red Devil hits were singles.

Laurens (7-3) won the C game by a score of 9-5, dropping Clinton to 8-3.


Laurens scored 6 runs in the first inning. Coleman Coker drove in 3 runs with a double, Ran Allen singled in another and 2 more scored on a wild pitch and a ground-ball out. Coker doubled again in the third, driving in 2.


Clinton (8-4) scored 3 in the third, via a passed ball, a Jacob Chandler sacrifice fly and a Jayden Glenn single.


Wilson Wages doubled on a 2-2 count in the top of the eighth inning, lifting the Clinton varsity to a 6-5 win over Broome in Spartanburg on Friday night.

Clinton is 3-0 in Region 3-3A.

Clinton got things started in the first inning. Kimon Quarles grounded out, producing 1 run.

A Tristen Horne single in the seventh enabled the Centurions to tie the score 5-5.

Noah Reece was the winning pitcher, allowing 3 hits and a run in 2-2/3 innings’ work. Brady Jones took the loss.

Jaylin Alexander was the Clinton starter. He pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs while striking out 3. Davis Wilson also doubled for the Red Devils, who were outhit 9-5 by Broome

The Clinton junior varsity clobbered the homestanding Centurions of Broome on Friday, pounding out 11 hits en route to a 12-0 shutout.

The Red Devils won the earlier game between the two, 7-6.

Zack Fortman stroked hits in each of his 3 at-bats. The top three in the Clinton order – Fortman, R.T. Corley and Zane McLendon – each scored 3 runs. Trent Roth produced the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Fortman was also the winning pitcher, going 3-1/3 innings, allowing just 1 hit, walking 3 and striking out 4. Zach Lollis also surrendered just a hit in 1-2/3 frames.


Before defeating Clinton on Saturday, Laurens fell, 12-8, to Greer on the road Friday after beating the Yellow Jackets varsity at home earlier in the week.


Greer scored 2 runs in the fourth inning and 2 more in the fifth to escape an 8-8 tie. Laurens had scored 4 runs in the second on a wild pitch and run-producing singles by Sulli Pinson and Mason Hamby. Pinson and Austin McNuer singles and a bases-loaded walk to Jackson Edward keyed a 4-run third, but the LDHS scoring ended there.


Spartanburg defeated Clinton in softball, 31-19, on Thursday.

Clinton (4-9) once led 12-6, until the Vikings scored 5 runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth.

Spartanburg outhit the Red Devils 25-10, but Maddi Wood belted 2 home runs and Ashley Shiftlet hammered a grand slam.

Woodruff dropped the Red Devils to 0-4 in Region 3-3A with a 16-4 victory over Clinton on Friday.
