One new wrinkle regarding the upcoming “season” of the Laurens County Touchdown Club is the weekly awarding of a Player of the Week by the club.

Only Laurens Academy is playing thus far. The Crusaders are 1-2, coming off two close losses and a 44-6 conquest of Clarendon Hall on Friday night. The TD Club’s president, Buddy Bridges, was on hand at Todd Kirk Field to present the first two awards to LA’s Judson Watkins and Thomas Lowry.

Former Presbyterian College head coach Harold Nichols will head up each week’s selections.

In an 18-12 loss to Holly Hill Academy on Aug. 28, Watkins led the Crusaders with 13 tackles. On Sept. 4 at Palmetto Christian, Lowry passed for 146 yards and rushed for 111 in a 42-38 setback. He passed for 4 touchdowns and rushed for another.

The first of five TD Club meetings is Thursday, Sept. 24, at The Ridge, beginning at noon. The first meeting honors the county’s coaches.

Clinton’s cross country program traveled to Simpsonville to take part in the Tiger Classic. The Red Devil boys finished 13th out of 20 programs and the girls were 14th out of 21.

Finishing in the top 25 for the boys were William Reid, 11th at 18:02; Connor Donley, 19th at 18:47; and Hayden Stinson, 19:34.

Elizabeth Reid led the girls with an 18th-place time of 23:48, followed by 19th-place Dorothy Trent at 23:55.
