The great game of American football forges onward under difficult circumstances, and so too does the Laurens County Touchdown Club.

This year’s schedule of Thursday noon meetings at The Ridge in Laurens consists of five bi-weekly, catered assemblages, with a few precautions in place to protect everyone from COVID-19, instead of the usual seven and the Annual Meeting, featuring WSPA-TV sports anchor Pete Yanity, on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 7.

The membership fee of $150 includes tickets to all six of these events.

The first meeting is on Thursday, Sept. 24, with previews of high school football from LDHS head coach Daryl Smith and Clinton’s Corey Fountain, and a report on the season to date from Laurens Academy’s Todd Kirk, whose Crusaders will have played their first four games.

The guest on Oct. 8, is Presbyterian College head coach Tommy Spangler, whose program has been idled this fall along with all other Blue Hose sports. For this one school year, football is likely to begin at PC’s Bailey Memorial Stadium in late winter or early spring.

Shell Dula, a Laurens native, PC graduate and former executive director of the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association, is the guest speaker on Oct. 22. During his coaching career, Dula won state championships at Ninety Six, Union and Greenwood high schools.

Brian Turk, head coach at Limestone University in Gaffney, is the speaker on Nov. 5.

Former playing greats Connor Shaw of South Carolina and Jeff Davis of Clemson are the speakers at the meeting on Nov. 19.
