Last week I picked all three of Laurens County’s football games correctly, and in all three instances the margin was greater than I predicted by consulting the lucky numbers on the fortune in the cookie at the Chinese joint.

I wrote Clinton would win by 14 and the Red Devils won by 21. Laurens won by 10 instead of one. Presbyterian lost by 20 instead of nine.

Ah! I’ve got it. This week I will pick the Blue Hose to win – or lose – by 40.

Oh, snap! PC is off.

Still, this was a good week for a guy who usually picks on the basis of nicknames, school colors and the occasional insight of actually watching the games.

Greenwood (4-1) at Laurens (2-3) – The Raiders may be the state’s best 2-3 team, which is a little like being the worst unbeaten. Still, LDHS has been in every game. The Eagles, coached by former LDH head coach Chris Liner, have passed every test other than the obligatory Dutch Fork disaster. At K.C. Hanna, if a big crowd shows up, the Raiders have a shot. But … Greenwood by 4.

Union County (0-3) at Clinton (5-0) – If Laurens is the state’s best 2-3 team, then add that distinction for Union County in terms of the winless. Oh, the Red Devils want the Yellow Jacket badddd. Last year UC won on the basis of a penalty when Clinton was on the 1-yard line. The two years before that were merciless blowouts. The Devils have checked every other box this year. Clinton by 6.

Laurens Academy (0-5) at Richard Winn (4-0) – A week off makes the Crusaders a little better and a little healthier. No matter. LA hasn’t beaten the Eagles in a loooonnngg time. Winn by 50.

Last week: 3-0. Season to date: 15-3.

Note: I’m not any better than anyone else at picking the outcome of ballgames, races, meets, matches and elections. My modest skill is that of a history major: I know what already happened. Prophecy wasn’t offered as a major. My advice is to read the above for amusement purposes only. For God’s sake, don’t lay a bet on what I think.
