Charleston Southern narrowly got out of Clinton with a victory, needing a go-ahead 3-pointer from Phlandrous Fleming Jr., with 0.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Buccaneers a 78-77 victory Monday night at Templeton Center.

Fleming Jr. led all scorers with 35 points. He fired early and often before he won it late. Fleming hit 8-22 (5-13 from outside the arc) from the floor and 14-19 from the line.

For the Blue Hose, Rayshon Harrison led with a career-high 31 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, notching his first career double-double. Trevon Reddish had 15 points, Owen McCormack 13 and Winston Hill 11.

The game was a tale of two halves for Presbyterian (7-14, 5-12 Big South). Charleston Southern grew its lead to as many as 17 points in the first half. This was mostly due to the Blue Hose’ poor shooting from behind the arc, only going 1-10 in the first half. The Buccaneers didn’t exactly shoot the lights out, either, but did shoot the 3-ball at a higher clip, going 5-15 in the first half.

At halftime, Charleston Southern (3-18, 2-15) led 43-30.

Energized coming out the break, Presbyterian opened the second half with a 9-2 run to cut its deficit to six points, with the score 45-39. The Buccaneers fought back a bit, increasing their lead to 10 (49-39).

But the Blue Hose didn’t budge. Over the course of the next eight minutes, Presbyterian outscored CSU 19-9 to tie the game at 58-58, with 6:41 left in regulation.

Both teams traded blows for the remainder of regulation, with neither garnering more than a 3-point lead. Presbyterian’s Rayshon Harrison had a chance to end it, but his 3-pointer at the end of regulation didn’t fall through the net.

The Blue Hose outscored Charleston So. 39-26 in the second half.

With the game tied at 69-69, the two teams entered a 5-minute overtime period.

Harrison hit a step-back 3-pointer to give the Blue Hose a 3-point lead with 3:03 left in OT (76-73). Scoring halted until the 0:20 mark when Charleston Southern’s Fleming knocked down two free throws to trim the Buccaneer deficit to just one.

With minimal time left on the clock, CSU had to foul, and did, sending Harrison to the line. Before this trip, Harrison was 12-12 from the charity stripe. Harrison hit the first, but missed the second, leaving the door open for the Buccaneers.

With 16 seconds left, Charleston Southern dribbled all but a few seconds out. Fleming sized his defender up before drilling the game-winning 3-pointer.

Presbyterian had 0.6 seconds left, but couldn’t advance the ball. Therefore, they drew up a full-court heave to Winston Hill, but the pass was intercepted.

As a team, the Blue Hose shot 34.3 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from three.

For Charleston Southern, in addition to Fleming’s 35, Ja’Quavian Florence contributed 22 points and Sadarius Bowser had 13.

The Buccaneers shot 36.4 percent from the field and 23.3 percent from behind the arc.

Presbyterian’s next opponent is still to be announced as it will participate in the Big South tournament later this week. Seedings will be announced soon.
