Presbyterian College has lost women’s basketball games twice by a point, once by two and twice by three this season. The last two seconds decided three of those games, all at Templeton Center.
North Carolina Asheville’s Amarya Corpening popped a 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining on Tuesday evening that turned a 1-point Blue Hose victory into a 2-point loss, 61-59.
PC has lost once this year when it scored with 1.9 seconds remaining … and Campbell scored again. In women’s basketball, the trailing team does not have to heave it the length of court. Similar to the pros, the team gets to in-bound the ball from halfcourt. The Blue Hose got off a shot … sort of. Basically as she was being waylaid by a UNCA defender, Carter threw the ball up as she was about to hit the floor.
It actually touched the backboard. If it had gone in, not only would it have been featured on SportsCenter; it would have won an Espy.
The five cliffhangers have hindered the progress of Alaura Sharp’s Blue Hose dramatically. Presbyterian is 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the Big South Conference. UNC Asheville is 8-10 and 7-6.
Led by Trinity Johnson with 19 points, Presbyterian had a dreadful second quarter and a terrific third. The Bulldogs led by 10 (34-24) at half, but the Blue Hose outscored them 17-5 in the third quarter to take a 41-39 edge entering the final quarter. The two teams slugged it out from there.
Johnson, who also had 5 assists and 3 steals, also hit 9-10 free throws. The one she missed was with six seconds remaining, but she made one that gave PC a 59-58 lead.
Corpening, who hit the game-winner, scored 22 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Nadiria Evans added 14 for the Bulldogs.
Carter scored 14 points and led the Blue Hose in rebounds with 7. Nyah Willis scored 9 points, Maleia Bracone 8 and Georgia Stockton 5. Tess Santos and Jade Compton each scored 2.
Presbyterian scored 13 straight points during its 17-5 third-quarter run and led by six (49-43) early in the fourth quarter.
UNCA outrebounded (40-36) and outshot (.400-.345 field goals) the Blue Hose. PC connected on just four 3-pointers in 20 tries. Corpening hit four of the Bulldogs’ six.
The Blue Hose do not play again until Feb. 25-26 at Winthrop in Rock Hill.
