For more than a month, Laurens High’s basketball teams sat idle. Now the Raiders, boys and girls alike, are playing catchup without any short-term memory of game competition, and it showed on Monday night when Greenville came to town.
The Red Raiders won the boys’ game 63-45 and girls’ 72-33.
The Laurens (2-10, 0-2 Region 2-4A) boys hung in for a half, leading 12-11 after a quarter and trailing 24-19 at halftime.
Greenville (13-4, 7-0) pounded the homestanding Raiders 22-4 in the third quarter. Prometheus Franklin did the most damage, pouring in 22 points. Andre Goodman added 16. The Red Raiders hit 26 of 48 field-goal attempts (.542) and 7-12 (.583) from the foul line.
Laurens (2-10, 0-2) hit 16 of 52 shots (.308) and 3-5 free throws.
The Red Raiders won the rebounding battle 32-26 and took advantage of 12 LDHS turnovers.
Ty Johnson scored 12 points to lead the Raiders. Chase Jackson and K.D. Mosley each had 6, Josh Cureton and Preston Mahon scored 5 apiece, Zy Miller had 3, and J.Q. Fair, Colin Gambrel and Isaiah Burnside all chipped in 2.
With 1:28 remaining in the first quarter of the girls’ game, Qua Fortson drained a 3-pointer.
That drew the Raiders within 13 points at 16-3, Greenville.
With 5:36 left in the half, Laurens’ next basket narrowed the Red Raiders’ lead to 24-5.
It didn’t get much better as Greenville (9-1, 4-1) led 35-17 at halftime and 60-23 after three quarters. The Raiders hit 11 of 49 shots (.224) and 2 of 9 free throws (.222). The Red, not green, Raiders got 22 points from J’Adore Young and shot .448 from the field and .722 from the line. Laurens (0-5, 0-2) committed 23 turnovers.
Fortson led LDHS with 19 points. Ca’Dayshia Grant added 5, Faith Jackson had 3, and three players – Angel Johnson, Amillion Evans and Macayle Revis – each had 2.
Greenwood visits on Friday for a tripleheader, beginning at 5:15 with a junior varsity boys’ game and followed by the two varsity teams.
