GREENWOOD – When the Lakelands FCA boys’ basketball tournament began at Emerald High School on Monday, it appeared likely that Laurens would play Clinton for a 3rd time in the 8-team, 3-day affair.

What actually happened in the 1st two days was that Saluda beat both.

The Tigers completed the mostly irrelevant sweep by defeating Laurens 48-31 on Tuesday after slipping past Clinton 54-50 on Monday.

It’s complicated.

Laurens (6-9) advanced past McCormick on Monday by virtue of the Chiefs’ COVID forfeit. Saluda (8-2) defeated Clinton, thus leaving the Red Devils with no team to play on Tuesday because of McCormick’s withdrawal.

The Raiders couldn’t stick with the Tigers in the 2nd half.

“The 4th quarter continues to haunt us, along with turnovers,” said LDHS head coach Tommy Spires.

And how. The Tigers outscored the Raiders 33-14 in the 2nd half and 21-6 in the 4th quarter.

Zion Wright led Saluda with 22 points. Lane Kinard added 13.

Isaiah Burnside, with 11 points, alone scored in double figures for the Raiders. Also recorded in the scorebook were the points of Preston Mahon (7), Blake Nelson (3), Marco Barnes (3), Vantavious Butler (3), Joshua Cureton (2) and Jackson Edwards (2).

Laurens takes on Belton-Honea Path on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 for 3rd place. Earlier, Clinton plays Ninety Six at 2.
