Based on what was said at her college signing, Michaela Smith is going to fit right in as a Fire Ant.
That’s the nickname of the University of South Carolina Sumter, where Smith is going to play softball next year.
It might also relieve confusion at Laurens District High School, where Michaela Smith, player, works under the supervision of Michaela Smith, coach, who was once a player for the Raiders.
What the two also have in common is a competitive spirit.
Coach Smith said she remembers watching Player Smith in the recreation leagues.
“She has always been the first to show up and the last to leave,” Coach said. “I never have to ask her to do something. … She has a work ethic to match anybody. I always know, at the end of the day, she has given it her all.”
Addressing her teammates, Player Smith said at her signing Friday, “I couldn’t have done it without you. Be diligent in everything you do and give it 110 percent.”
Younger Michaela plans to major in criminal justice at the 2-year school. She is projected to be a fine law enforcement officer.
