Four former athletes at Laurens District High School are making a name for themselves in particular “at the next level.”

Two, coincidentally, are at the University of Louisville.

Senior Anna Stevenson, who began her career at Auburn, was All-Atlantic Coast Conference, second team, in her first season at Louisville. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 6 nationally. Their 5-2 record (overall and conference) in the talent-rich ACC includes victories over Boston College (2), Syracuse (2) and Pittsburgh, with the losses coming to Notre Dame and Pitt.

The abbreviated season ran from Sept. 25 to Oct. 25.

Stevenson ranked third on the team in points (71.5) and kills (56).

Duane Martin, a Shrine Bowler for LDHS’s Region 1-5A championship team in 2019, has played in three games with the Cardinals with an eye toward being red-shirted.

Martin, now a tight end after playing running back and linebacker for the Raiders, caught 2 passes for 27 yards in a 30-0 victory over Syracuse and has made a solo tackle and recovered a fumble on special teams. He has seen action against the Orange, Florida State and Wake Forest.

Thomas Jones, whose career in the Miami Marlins system was on hiatus along with all of minor-league baseball due to the coronavirus, has been tentatively assigned to the Marlins’ Triple-A roster for 2021.

A third-round draft pick in 2016, Jones batted .239 for Miami’s Class A team in the Midwest League, the Clinton LumberKings, in 2019. If all goes well in spring training, Jones is ticketed to play outfield in 2021 for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Charlotte is also a member of the International League.

Jacksonville, which had been the Marlins’ Double-A affiliate, will field a Triple-A club for the first time since 1968.

Troy Dendy was the South Atlantic Conference’s Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2019 at Carson-Newman College of Jefferson City, Tenn., where he rushed for 700 yards in 85 carries, scoring six touchdowns.

The Eagles, like many smaller schools, did not play during the fall and will play a 4-game schedule in the spring of 2021. C-N will face Virginia Wise, Mars Hill, Limestone and Tusculum. The schedule runs from March 13 through April 10.
