SPARTANBURG -- Jesse Singh tuned up for the season by pumping in 17 points to lead Byrnes past Laurens 64-51 in a tipoff tournament at Spartanburg Christian Academy on Monday afternoon.

Mason Aiken matched Singh note for note and also scored 17 for the Raiders, who play again at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday against either Boiling Springs or Mauldin.

Laurens’ Josh Cureton was the game’s only other double-figure scorer with 10, though the Rebels got 9 points from Kobe Staggs and 8 from Thomas Gregory and Evan Enos.

Byrnes (1-0) edged the Raiders by one point in the 2nd half after building a 32-20 lead at halftime.

The loss was Tommy Spires’ debut as Laurens head coach.

Also getting notations in the scorebook were Ty’Quavis Johnson with 6 points, Waldrick Burnside and Preston Mahon with 4, Van Butler and Devin Red with 3, and Blake Nelson and Jackson Edwards, both with 2.
